But compared to the generations that fought for this right, the public opinion amongst millennials on abortion has grown more negative. Feelings of shame, regret and guilt dominate the narrative. This is caused by a growing conservative movement in Europe that make themselves heard loud and clear constantly. In the Netherlands you can find them protesting at the gates of women’s clinics and online. The anti-choice organisations cause confusion around people who choose abortion. Painting a false image of egocentrism and women who live with regrets for the rest of their lives. In the absence of a different narrative this anti-choice lobby has been dominating the media. But there is a different side to this story. A side that is not often heard, because it didn’t have a voice yet. Scientific evidence has shown that the most common emotion felt after having an abortion is not shame but relief. ‘Abortion saves lives’. It’s an entire human life. We show this by creating 75 portraits of people that have been born since the war ended. We start with the 75 year old Jan van der Linden, born on May 5th 1945 and work our way up with a portrait each year until we arrive in the present with the baby who is due to be born on May 5th 2020. These 75 people are born in freedom and have not witnessed war or suppression, but their relatives have. A new generation ensures that the stories of their families are not getting lost and will be remembered for future generations.
